Per Maryland law, it is the responsibility of the MOA to submit to the Governor a list of (three) recommended candidates for appointment to the Maryland State Board of Examiners in Optometry (BOE) in the event of a Board vacancy. With the impending departure of current BOE member, Dr. Brian Woolf, whose term will expire on May 31, 2018, Governor Hogan has requested the MOA provide a list of qualified candidates to his Appointment Office on or before March 9, 2018. To apply for consideration as a nominee, please read qualifications below and complete the MOA "REQUEST FOR CANDIDACY FORM" below

To be eligible for consideration, an optometrist must:

  1. be a Maryland resident; and
  2. have been licensed to practice optometry in Maryland for a minimum of five years.
Requests for consideration must be received by the MOA no later than February 20, 2018. See directions below on how to submit a request. Only qualified persons who have returned a COMPLETE request submission by this date will be considered.

Should more than three qualified individuals express interest in the appointment, an electronic ballot listing all nominees' names will be published on the MOA website ( and will also be sent out electronically. The ballot will remain available from February 22 through March 3, 2018 at 5pm; during which time, all Maryland licensed optometrists may cast ONE vote for the nominee of their choice. The MOA will submit the names of the three candidates with the highest number of votes to the Governor for consideration.

Should you have any questions about the submission or ballot process, please contact MOA Executive Director, Ms. Jennifer Levy, at (410) 486-9662.
